These particular washers have a split in them, which, when tightened, bites into each side of the nut and the mounting surface, preventing them from rotating anti-clockwise.

What’s more, they are ideal for reducing ‘play’ in assemblies helping compensate for small dimensional changes in assembled components, eliminating endplay or rattles, and allowing for expansion and contraction of the material.
